This is our favorite 1 day ride. Don't plan to do it before mid-June....due to road closed by snow.

Started on Sunday afternoon after a very hard couple of weeks at work. The trip out was a bit crowed with cars and a few trailers and boats being towed. Of course as always I ran into these at the best sections of road so I was disappointed but reminded myself it was Sunday. I stayed at the AllSeasons motel in Detroit that was inexpensive and clean. Monday morning I headed south towards Sweet Home and took Straight Creek Road 19 miles out of Detroit. Nice 70m side road to Sweet Home. This road starts as a 2 lane and goes to single so you have to be careful but I encountered only 3 other travelers on the road. Nice curves and good condition with 2 or 3 gravel danger spots. Monday late afternoon I was back in Detroit to take 224 back towards home in Portland. Them I got a real taste for the road in this review. They must have fixed the potted areas as it was in great condition. Bitchen views, some tighter corners and a number of triple digit sweepers. Not that I would speed or anything. Worth doing as a day drive mid week for sure!

I live in Estacada. I have made probably 50 to 60 trips in the last 10 to 12 years to Detroit from Estacada. I have traveled some beautiful roads but this ride is one of my favorites and I never get tired of it.

Rode this last weekend (Aug 28,2010) w/a friend and really enjoyed it. Scenery is wonderful, not too much traffic and the road was in great condition. Lots of twists and turns but just took our time and thought is was one of the best day rides we have done. Went from Salem to Detroit, stopped for lunch, to Estacada and back to Salem for 175 ml ttl.

Lots of beautiful scenery, plenty of twisties and a few straightaways. Most of the turns are moderately tight and the road gets narrow in a couple places but always two lanes.
I've ridden this route twice now and never seen police but don't go crazy because there can be rocks and while most of the road is in really good condition there are some spots that will unseat you if you're pushing it really hard. After you cross the river and go through one of the only hair-pin turns the road becomes unpredictable and rough for about 5 miles. There also seems to be persistent wet patches no matter how hot it is. If it's a nice weekend there will also be intermittent and sometimes unpredictable traffic as there's free camping alongside the road in certain spots (you'll see a sign in this area) and plenty of campgrounds as well.
I actually had a breakdown last time I road this and discovered that I had to have my bike towed all the way to Salem to find a repair shop. While riding back the two truck driver told me he's seen plenty of dead motorcyclists on this route so please be careful guys. Also, riding north is more dangerous due to falling rocks so I suggest always starting on the north end and riding south.

Took this ride earlier today.
The good: Great ride and I added a loop over to sublimity and then north back to PDX on 213, very fun ride. Stopped for some ok BBQ in Detroit.
The scary: The guys who spoke of the dangers of this ride we're not wrong, I came upon the Forest service rangers around a fatal motorcycle accident. Please be very careful everyone. It is a doable ride just take it slow and be careful on curves.

World class scenery, fishing, camping. South from Detroit is the heart of the Cascades...Sisters, Bend, Crater Lake, Shasta...Watch out for deer at dusk or at night though, of course. From Estacata to Detroit and back is my "default" ride since I live in Sandy...

I went on this ride yesterday, and it was great.. Very light traffic. The scenery was amazing... I wish I would of taken my camera and stopped at the many places to take great pictures.. There are a lot of tight corners and curvy twisties to keep you on your toes.. There are quite a few sneaky pot holes and bumps that will definitely grab your attention.. Overall, it was a great way to spend my afternoon off work!

This is one of the best rides in the Portland, Oregon metro area. Over the last few years (this is a 2019 review) the road has had a lot of repairs and is currently in good shape. There are portable restrooms and a small convince store at the Ripplebrook ranger station, about halfway through the ride. Fuel is available in both Estacada and Detroit.

A really wonderful ride, especially on a very hot day since it's cooler up in the mountains. Road condition is a little bumpy in places but mostly smooth. 4 wheelers can be a pain as always.

Rode this route on my sport bike in 2015. Just a couple of short sections of dirt near Detroit lake, but otherwise you can ride any type bike on this road. This route is for riding, lots of miles with NO SERVICES in between. Check conditions in this area as drought and wildfires occurred in the past 3 years.

As of November 2020, this route is closed to all traffic at both the north and south entrances due to massive wildfire damage in September 2020. Feeling burned trees and landslides are the current hazardous. There are staffed checkpoints at the closures.
The road is not expected to open before spring of 2021. I rode this route twice in the summer of 2020. I'll post an update once the road reopens.

I've ridden this road several times. It's only open a few months a year because of weather, and there's about a mile stretch at the top that is gravel, so be ready for that. Make sure you've got some warm gear because the weather can change in a heartbeat .

This is a nice day ride. We started out of Salem early on a cold morning in June. Took Hwy 22 to Detroit did bace ride to Estacada then took 211 thru Mollala and Woodburn then 99E back home. With lunch and hydration stops it was about a 7 hour loop.
