I agree with other comments, this is a GREAT ride! However, this description above is not quite accurate. The waterfalls are all south of Franklin on the way to Highlands. That part of Hwy 28 is not highlighted. From Franklin north to Hwy 74 is just excellent, with very little traffic and lots of twisties. Ride the whole stretch from Hwy 74 south to Highlands and continue on Hwy 64 to Brevard if you want more ammenities. Of course Franklin makes a great homebase for hitting all the local roads, with plenty of motels and food.

28 is fantastic all the way into Georgia. The section most beautiful is between Franklin and Highlands where all the waterfalls are. However if you continue on 28 all the way to where it meets 107 in GA then go left on 107 back toward Cashiers, NC is a great loop. Highly recommended..

This is unquestionably my favorite road in the southeast. It's a must ride for anyone traveling to the area. The Cherohala and the Dragon are great rides, but don't really compare to this stretch of highway. It feels like a self propelled roller coaster to me. It's a nearly non-stop series of left and right handers with a seamless transition between them. For an incredible ride, set up a route that connects the Dragon, Cherohala and the upper and lower sections of 28.

The repaving of this stretch of 28 is now complete. As of 1/2017, the road has an entirely new blacktop surface, and is prime for riding again. It's much smoother and much faster with the new surface, and has been completely repaved from the Swain/Macon county line to the northern end at Hwy 74.

Heads up: NCDOT is currently (Sept. 2017) repaving this section of Highway 28 from the Swain/Macon county line northward to US 74. The road is very rough with big transitions, and pavement cuts down the middle of your lane. This makes it difficult for spirited/aggressive riding. Sections are also shut down to one lane with a pilot car at intervals. Hopefully the work will be done soon.

This is one of the best routes that I have ridden. I liked it better than Dragons Tail. It was alot safer too. I would highly recommend this ride to anyone. Great views also.

This is quite possibly the best road in the entire country. It has everything you could ask for. Tight curves, sweepers, off camber, descending radius, a few straightaways, beautiful views and hardly any traffic at all. Definately the best road in the area including the Gap.

This is about my favorite road. Legal speed limit posted is 55 MPH. You will be lucky to do that. So many curves. Knee dragging curves. Good pavement. This road is lightly traveled, mostly locals who know to watch for two wheelers. portions afford good views, but you will be too busy grinnin at the pavement to notice. There are a couple sections along the river which is nice. Once you come into the northern part of Franklin it can get crowded. There are some other backroads to avoid this. We ride this all the time and call it Coke Truck road because one of our group narrowly missed a Coke truck swinging over the double yellow at a tight curve. Incorporate this route with the Cullasaja Gorge into Highlands and you will have a great day!

This review is actually what many consider the middle segment of Route 28. The upper segment goes from US19/74 to Deals Gap, the lower segment is south of Highlands into South Carolina. No matter, for my money, this stretch of pavement is by far the best in the East and in my top five for the entire U.S. And I've ridden extensively in the West. Why it's great: several reasons. First, it has a lot of short distance elevation change. Second, the pavement surfaces are good, with little gravel and a lot of bite. No off cambers and no winders. It drains well--I've ridden it in the pouring rain--and so the surface is tight. They know how to build roads in the Carolinas. There are some blind turns, but a lot of them have good sight distance right through the apex so you can really tear if you want. Some traffic, but not too bad. Mile for mile and curve for curve, it beats everything else in the area, in my view. You gotta ride it. Repeatedly.

Great route that peters out a bit as you get down into Franklin. The north part of the road is just a wiggling ribbon. What a fun ride.
The road isn't particularly dirty, or dangerous. Not a lot of towns passed through, not a lot of traffic. As such it's always been a joy to ride on. Twisties that tame down to sweepers the further south you go.

This is hands down the best stretch of curves I have ever been on. Fresh blacktop in August 2018. It doesn't have the traffic of the Tail of the Dragon. Stopped at Dry Falls and walked underneath. This area is beautiful.

Rode this on September 20, 2020. Pavement was brand new. Early morning, not crowded. Plenty of curves. Scenery included lots of kudzu that had overwhelmed some abandoned homes. Great segment to include in your ride!

28 between 74 & Franklin is one of my favorites. Super road surface, good sight lines & lots of sweet sweepers. One of the few roads that I almost always drag foot pegs. Better to ride it before you get cocky though; there’s a couple of curves that tighten up on you right when you think you’ve got it figured out…
