We did the portion of this route known as the Devils Whip. The road is fantastic! (PS. Sorry to crash the motorcycle group, but this resource has been fantastic for our car club). The day we drove it as a group the road had hardly any traffic and the pavement conditions were excellent!

What a Great road! We were visiting the Blue Ridge Parkway and discovered it by accident. It was pouring rain and we were ready to call it a day when we came to a sign that said Marion 16 miles and the other town was 17 miles in the opposite direction, so I chose the short route. OMG! We didn't know what were getting ourselves into. Pouring rain and this road ain't cool, but we made it just fine and spent the night in Marion. We rode back up the next morning (it was clear weather) just to see it without rain and fog. Great ride!

I love this ride! It is probably my favorite of all the trips we make. However the Beginners Beware advice is for real, but it's a heck of an adrenaline rush!

This road seperates the bikers from the posers. Beware!! tends to take chrome off the mufflers and my kidneys hurt for a week after my girlfriend finally let go. Don't ride this to prove anything. It's deceptive and unforgiving. Deserves a 10 but I'm always looking for the "next greatest".

This one needed an recent review. This is one of my favorite rides to do, coming in from Charlotte. We can run it a couple times if we get out early enough.

BEWARE at the moment, a lot of tar on 226a after repairs from the winter. Riders who want to ride this need to do so in dry weather, wet weather makes the road terribly slick. I am local and I try to avoid this road right now until it is properly fixed

This road is a great road to ride! I only live less that 5 miles from it and one reason it is one of the last great roads in NC is because there has not been alot of people that knew about it untill the last few years. Now it is getting all this attintion it will be just like the Dragon or 421 in TN. or 181 in NC. It can continue to be a great road to ride as long as everyone comes and rides it and shows this road the respect in deserves because it will Bite, and it will Bite you hard! If you slip up its a long way down the side of the mountain!!!! So come ride and enjoy, but please be carefull!

I truly think HW80 and 226 are more fun than the dragon. The elevation change is incredible! But seriously be careful, there is no room for error on this ride. With rock walls on your right and blind right turns, you should be ever vigilant for those 1000 foot drops and trucks not in their lanes!

Some great riding. This loop incorporates part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. But adds in 226A loop and part of the best of highway 80 from Marion up to the Blue Ridge. Nice little couple hour ride. Stop for a great sandwich at Little Switzerland. Alternate take highway 80 back down the other side to Micaville (see someone else's route planned for that). Good pavement, Often the Blue Ridge can be closed at the drop of the hat by the NPS for ice, snow, etc, even when other roads are clear and dry.

Sorry, I hit enter too soon.
This route is a great route if you have experience with switchbacks. I prefer to travel up 80 (Devil's Whip) and down 226A (Diamondback) as it is easier to really get into the turns. The ride between the two on the Blue Ridge Parkway has a couple overlooks to photo-op with the stupid grin that you get after a nice twisty ride. A favorite stop for everyone is the cafe in Little Switzerland as you get ready to hit the Diamondback.
The only reason that it is a 4 and not a 5 is that on the weekend days it is a madhouse on 226, 226A, and 80. The number of people out there has exploded in the last 10 years. The mini cooper guys seem to be out there EVERY time i go.
If you go early, during the week, or when it is cool, you will have a better chance to open it up.

It's a shame it seems to rain so much off of Blue Ridge down the devil's whip to 70. However, the one time that I've been on it of the numerous times in this area the road was pretty intimidating, and even more so in the wet. However, it was entirely worth the ride. Another mainstay that should be added to the list of all comers in this area. A down and back Blue Ridge to Blue Ridge via 80 would probably be more interesting than the loop that is mapped.

Rode 70-80 a couple of years ago to get to the park way. Not my kind of riding on a Harley. Miles of switch backs.

Took this route with some friends today. It was alot of fun. However that is what we enjoy, the twisties! Agreed, its not for beginners! My only issues were that 80 was not in great condition, needs paved & it was trashy. Lots of gravel limbs in the road. I am hoping it's just from the recent storms in this area. We will go back to find out.

caution on 226a. They are setting up speed traps as of this year. Looking for some extra money for the area

Rode this back in July/2019. Fun ride, we had a little more traffic on 226 than we expected. Have no doubt weekdays are the time to go. If I recall 80 had a few rough spots here and there. Little Switzerland was cool, didn't eat, just stopped in to check it out and buy a couple t-shirts. Scenery is nice I'm sure, but need to keep eyes on the road and stay focused.

Good road! Lots of fun to be had with all the twisties. Use extreme caution when stopping. Roads and parking areas are often on such slopes that your leg is not long enough on one side. Saw 5 riders stop and drop while eating in Little Switzerland. Do not recommend for the novice rider.

Another great WNC ride. NC 80 is full of blind corners and steep, no-shoulder drop offs. Stay focused on your path of travel or pay the stupid tax. Some of the reviews talk about 276 and the Cradle of Forestry. Those areas are more than 60 miles from this loop by Marion. It's easy to get NC roads confused because there are so many options, but Beginner Beware is closer to the High Country region of Western North Carolina.

Not for beginners!! Fun and challenging road! Watch for other vehicles, including motorcycles, in your lane in the curves!! Several fatalities here each year, be on your toes!!!
