I've been to this road twice in two years and will return again next year. Between the Hellbender, the Dragon, and the Cherohala... you can't get much better. Beautiful surroundings and you can get lost for days riding all the roads in the area. Plenty of places to stay and eat in the area.

This review shows only from Stecoah to Deals Gap (129). I dont understand why. We rode the entire portion of 28 from 74 to Deals Gap (and then of course the Dragon) but the portion of 28 between 74 and Stecoah is also very beautiful and we really enjoyed it. Some of the most breathtaking views of Lake Fontana from the Mountains anywhere. Highly suggested to make the whole ride.

Add this one to a list of rides to visit while you are at the Tail of the Dragon. Beautiful scenery and a great road but it seems that every road in and around the Dragon are great. And while you are there don't forget Happy Valley road.

I would have rated the road higher, but was really working htis weekend to keep it on the pavement. It was raining miserably hard, and visibility was extremely poor. The turns were still good fun, and whenI managed to catch a few minutes between rains clouds it was an absolute blast. Stayed at the Kickstand Lodge, and that was well worth the 8 hours riding it cost me to get there. Great folks right next to a great mountain road. Going again later this year.

Rode Cherohala, Dragon's Tail and Hellbender, both directions on 28 and Dragon's Tail. Like Rt.28 better than all the others. Awesome road !

We started from Tellico Plains onto the Cherohala, turned north onto 129, went up and had lunch at "The Dragon" and then took 28 back to 74 and rode back home to Jacksonville, FL.. My wife liked the Hellbender better than the Dragon...I like them all.

Roads are good without much traffic. Gas stops, stores, and civilization are far and few between. The ones we found had high gas prices. Didn't care for Fontanna Resort at all. Deals Gap guys were great. Great roads, good scenery but avoid the resort.

The road is great, the only reason I didn't give the road 5 stars is because there was quit a bit of gravel on the road. I stayed at Fontana Village Resort, the room was great. Service was fantastic and the beer was cold. A must for your trip to the Gap.

this is a very nice ride. Road it on 4/30/08 with some great friends some were new to riding and others had some experiance it went very well there is post card scenery at almost every turn an it was a good warm up to the dragon. Keeping in mind for everyone to remember to respect the road an ride within there limits, and dont let the impationt riders push them beyond them. there is plenty of places to stop and enjoy the scenery an take a break if you need. This is a high 9 on a 10 scale

Nice road, and enjoyed it alot. I found it after the ride on dragon's Tail. I go up twice a year since I bought my bike new in 2006. I am returing this Oct.09 and bringing 9 other couples with me, 13 bikes. I will be bringing to ride the Dragon, The Skyway, and Hell Bender. Also a ride to Highlands, Franklin, Cashiers, and back through the Smokies! Oh yea, if the rocket bikes are pushing you, let them by, trust me, you will see the dumb ones again a litlle further down the road. Just wave as you go by! Good luck be safe and ride for the enjoyment!!!

Great ride with plenty of curves and mountain scenery. Good road surface. Popular road for car clubs and crotch rockets, so try to go early in the week to enjoy. Lots of other great rides in this area.

This was my favorite road, including the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. You can open it up a bit more and stretch your legs. A really fun ride. An absolute must ride road.

At the time that I rode this the locals and the T-shirts called this "Moonshine 28". I actually like this better than The Tail of the Dragon, on track with Cherracola Skyway. More casual ride and not everyone was not acting like it was some kind of a race. Stayed at Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge just off 28.

If I could rate this road higher I would. We enjoyed riding this much more than the Dragon. The road is very well maintained, less traffic and the scenery is better. Lots of twists, turn, sweeping curves and even a few OH SH*T moments. There isn't a bad road to ride in this area. The Hellbender isnt as bad as it sounds. Just pay attention and enjoy the ride.

We spent the whole day riding in this area, first time....simply stunning. Cherohala Pass, The Dragon, and a few more, however our favorite hands down is the Hellbender 28. Perfect amount of canopy/lighting, scenery, turns, just a beautiful route. Ride this if you are doing the Dragon you won't regret it.

Visited the area in September 2021, what a gorgeous place! We took the Cherohala Skyway, The Dragon and The Hellbender nd some others. Have to say we enjoyed The Hellbender the most. Less congested, beautiful scenery, good road conditions. Worth the trip

Rode on September 21, 2020. Riding from Cherokee through to Deals Gap. Great way to start a day of riding. Very polite traffic too. A commercial truck pulled over to let me pass.

This would rate 5 stars in any other location, next to the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway i would say a 4. Roads were well kept and shady to keep out of the sun. When hitting the Dragon, dont forget to take a stroll down this road.
