This route is nothing but typical 2 lane town to town w/ a lot of traffic until you get north of Taylorsville...Save your time and take I-77 north to I-40 west to exit 148, hwy 64 west to Taylorsville. Then get on 16 north...You will then cross the Brushy Mtns. through the apple orchards...Continuing on north of N. Wilkesboro is when the ride really gets good...16 continues to Virginia and right near the state line is Shatley Springs...This stop is a must if you like really good country cookin' (Just like momma's).

Good ride. I added 421 to the Blue Ridge Parkway into Blowing Rock, where I stopped at Tucker's Cafe. Then 321 south into Lenoir and 90 across to Taylorsville where I picked up 16 again and went back to Charlotte. About 260 miles total and a good ride!!!

Took 16 in 96 degree weather. I really enjoyed the ride, the best area is above Taylorsville. I cut over to 115 via country club road and took 115 south. While I enjoyed 16 north, 115 south above Statesville was really beautiful and there was literally no traffic. Nice smooth road and lots of nice curves. I took 115 down to Davidson. There are nice historic towns along the way. Beware of Mooresville. I picked up a nail in my front tire and had to trailer the bike home. Talking with some folks around there as they said that a number of roofs are being replaced in the city due to hail damage.

Loved this ride! first half was heading north was a little boring but once we started hitting the small towns and got in to the hills, it was beautiful. I would have to say if your going to do this ride, dont rob yourself and make a loop out of it by going back on st rt 115! It had a lot of historical towns with great little stops such as coffee shops and snack places. I would have to say it may been better than st rt 16!
Thanks to all for the adviceon this run. it was a good way to break in the new (first) Harley.

Ridden this many times as it is the most fun way to reach The Back of the Dragon in Marion VA. Its not a difficult ride and there are some interesting views as you near the BRP.

We took 18 to Lenoir then crossed over to Wilkesboro. Loved the scenery . We ate at Elsewhere on10th in North Wilkesboro which is a hidden jewel. Nice ride not much to do once there.

A great alternative to the mountains instead of major highway. Except for a short stint on 16 that is under construction the roadway is excellent. Nice for scenic but not exceptional. The further north the better the ride.

Northern part is why I give it 4 stars. Area below 40 is more of a 2.5. Combine this with Brush Mtn Rd for a great loop out of Charlotte

From CLT to Taylorsville, it was OK, but not really anything special. From Taylorsville to Wilksboro , it was very nice. Scenic with lots hills with sweeping turns. There was some construction, but overall the road was in good condition. I'd do it again if headed up that way.

We took the Rte16N ride from Charlotte to Wilksboro. Nice ride with views of the countryside. Stopped and had lunch at The Triple Play , as small family owned place that is spotless. Nice friendly people and the food was great. Had the triple play burger! And the homemade Boston creme pie was the best! The ride was great and there was little traffic on the road. We did the ride on a Saturday. I will do this ride again some time.

Best part of this road is north of Wilkesboro in my opinion. Outside of Wilkes it connects to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the ride to the parkway has a few nice twists on it. And the Triple Play is no longer is business. This road has a lot of traffic from Charlotte but is a good alternative to riding 4 lanes up.

Great ride after you get out of the Charlotte area proper. 16 north is a great ride. You go over a nice bridge and you can stop at an overlook and see a damn. The town of wilksboro is nice as well

I have ridden this rode many many times as it is my most direct route to the mountains. It is fairly easy with big sweeping curves and climbs. It gets much better north of Wilkesboro to the Parkway and beyond.
