The Cullasaja Gorge is a beautiful ride between Franklin, NC and Highlands, NC. The road is very twisty and on a week day can be a fun ride. It can be VERY crowded, especially on weekends. The gorge and waterfalls are spectacular. there are a few places to pull over and take photos. But that is the danger. Many cars park and kids running around, into the roadway. This road was repaved in 2015 or 16 and is very nice now. Highlands is a great little town to stop and eat lunch. Buck's coffee is my favorite spot for great coffee and sandwichs.

This is by far the most beautiful portion of Moonshiner 28, however if you are going to ride it, start at least of U.S.19 north of Franklin and ride Moonshiner 28 all the way into GA. You can go left (North) on 107 which will take you back into Cashiers, NC where you can make numerous choices from there. Fabulous Ride !

Even in the rain it's a great road, the waterfalls were beautiful! Highlands Smokehouse for lunch... and then you twist a little, squiggle a little, and curve, curve, curve some more!

Yes! Great Rd. Rode w/ my 17 Y.O. daughter (beginner - she loved it) We went from Highlands to Franklin which is down. The dry falls area has been improved. Good eats in Highlands at Pescado's or get a big burger at the market. Blue Ridge Roadhouse ( I think) is the place in Franklin. LoneStar style w/ friendly staff and good food. Can't seem to add pix at this time.

Took State Rt. 28 (runs concurrently with 64 in this stretch) from Deal's Gap to Franklin, Franklin to Highlands and beyond to Seneca,SC. Great ride with lots of curves, beautiful scenery, curves, watefalls, great small towns, and more curves. This section through the Cullasaja Gorge is the best part of this great ride. The highlight of a 5 day, 8 state ride!

This is my husbands favorite road. We always stay in Franklin, NC and ride 64 at least once when we go. My husband drives and I sightsee from the back of the bike. Lots of curves and beautiful water to look at almost all of the way. Numerous places to pull off & you can climb down to the river. They are also constructing a large pull off with picnic tables, ect not far from Highlands. We were there last weekend and it looks like they may have if finished before the end of summer. Nice place for a picnic lunch and lots of good photos. 64 is definitely worth the ride!

US 64 IS AN AWESOME RD, THE SCENERY IS BREATH TAKING. WARNING: DO NOT TAKE BEGINNER RIDERS BECAUSE IN MY OPINION THIS SECTION IS WORSE THAN THE DRAGON BUT FUN IF YOU LIKE CURVES.

Great twisty road the further south you get, but with the biggest problem being the traffic. There's just a lot to do on this route, I guess. There's lots of recreational area, it's a main artery through the Smokys, and as such count yourself lucky if you do get to 'hit the twisties' at a spirited pace. More than likely you'll have bursts of free time, but be stuck behind a Soccer Mom/Dad or camper etc.
That said, it is a pretty road and has great views while you're stuck behind said person. You can see on the map where it gets twisty. It's not really worth much of a damn north of that...

This route is great for the waterfall photo opportunities. Some you can get you bike in and others need a brief hike to enjoy. The road is well know for having sections of it fall off, into the raven that it hugs, so proceed with caution. It is also a busy connector for local traffic so watch for on-coming big rigs.

Good warmup ride for the rest of WNC. Beware traffic. Some folks have apparently never driven around a curve before. Stay in your lane!
