I traveled north to red bluff from the coast on 43, then on to Red bluff. While there a bud and I climbed down to the river and found the old train wreck. Neat, three old train cars on their side by the Pearl river. Go right when you hit the tracks to see them on the curve. Nice ren, but didn't go to Montecello. Maybe next trip

I rated this route as a 10 - a 10 for Mississippi. It has it all - twisties, hills, scenery, little traffic - but lots of fellow bikers during the spring and summer. Would recommend the Round Table in Columbia, MS for lunch any day. On Sunday you will need to get there before the church crowd.

It's an ok ride. Anticipation was high but once at the canyon it was ok. Not great, but just ok. Ate at the Roundtable in Columbia. They sit you with others at these huge tables with large lazy susans in the middle full of country foods. Excellent. Across from the Post Office in an old white house.

Made the trip to Red Bluff yesterday and on up to Monticello. Nice ride. Some of the curves surprised me. It was a welcome change from all the flat roads I'm used to here in south MS.

Also beware of gravel and sandy patches in the low points of curves and at sideroads and driveways.
587 has been moved a few times because the bluff has been eroding it away. It is a must do ride if you are in the area.

Excellent route. Would be a great road for any type of motorcycle. Lots of twists and elevation changes. My only complaint is that the road surface isn't perfect. There is a pull off for a hiking area and there are a few antique houses and shacks on the route. the highway ends in Monticello Mississippi. Seems like a cute town.

Easily a 9 out of 10 compared to many of the roads in Southern MS and LA. Hwy 587 between Columbia and Monticello is an amazing ride with plenty of twisties to keep you on your toes. The route provides good elevation and relief with fast sweepers, tight 90 degree turns, and blind corners. You can maintain decent speed through the entire route with road signs providing accurate information about upcoming corners. The road condition is okay but not great. The asphalt has eroded in many places leaving tan surfaces that are difficult to discern between hard surface and gravel. These patches can be a bit unnerving in the corners, but overall, very few turned out to be gravel. This is a "must ride" route if you like corners.

Not impressed at all. Some long sweepers but nothing twisty at all. Scenery wasn’t that great either, wouldn’t ride again.

This is must ride for any biker. You will be amazed at the site. Nothing like this in any other part of Mississippi. Be careful on 587 as there are patches of gravel and sand in areas of this road where drives enter.

Red Bluff was more than I expected. The road(curves/condition) from HWY 587 , near HWY 98, to Red Bluff I thought deserved at least a 6 of 10 rating. The curves after Red Bluff, I thought, deserved a 9 of 10 rating without the gravel. With the gravel in the curves, especially where there was no drive-way, and the need of re-surfacing warrants this section of road to have no more than a 2 of 10 rating. I would do it again.

This is a good little road with a lot of curves! The surface really leaves something to be desired though; I spent the entire time worring about my grip on the road and not being able to enjoy the ride. Scenery is pretty limited, but there were a few nice "rural Mississippi" moments. All-in-all I wouldn't go completely out of your way to hit this stretch of road, but if you're in the area it's really worth the trip!

Overall a fun road if you like the countryside.
-Road surface is below average. No gaping potholes but is rough and bumpy.
-No services from Columbia to Monticello.
-For scenery, the Red Bluffs are worth stopping for. It was pretty surprising to find something like this in a normally flat area. This road takes you through a pretty isolated area. We saw more wild hogs (five or six) on the road than other vehicles (ONE). Some good country moments-creeks, ponds, pine trees, small rolling hills, etc, to make it enjoyable.
I hope to ride this again next time I'm in the area.

This is our favorite stretch of highway! We call it the "Tail of the Possum". A friend of mine that is in a Trans Am club told me they love that run as well, and he came up with the name. We like to run a loop from Sumrall, out 44 to Columbia, up 587 to Monticello, then back down 42 to Sumrall. We probably won't do this ride again till the temps are in at least the 70s, but would love to have some new friends along on this ride. Give me a yell!
