Continue this trip on around Lake Superior! The scenery on the north shore beyond Thunder Bay is fantastic. Granite outcroppings framing fabulous views of the lake. It's quite a haul to Sault Ste. Marie, but I've been drawn back to make the trip three times now.
An hour north and west of Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario), there's a fantastic inn on Batchawana Bay named Salzburger Hof. Great view, food, service, and they love motorcyclists. Check their website: https://www.salzburgerhofresort.com/

This ride is magnificent whether you want to just stay on the road all the way to the border or if you want to take any of the NUMEROUS stops along the way including restaurants, resorts, & parks. Lots of hiking opportunities and innumerable photo ops.
**TIP: Try to take in the scenery of the North Shore/Lake Superior when SOUTHbound; ideally in the afternoon. The view is all in front of you instead of over your shoulder.
Also, be very alert and ready for cars stopped ahead of you waiting to turn left as their aren't any turning lanes!!

If you get up here to ride, take the time to make two side trips
-Highway One up to Ely. Great road, there was some construction summer of 07, but it should be done now. Keep your eyes out for wolves, bear and moose. I think it's about a 2 hour drive up.
-Take the Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais all the way to the end, you can see Canada across the lake at the National Forest campground. You'll see the results of the forest fire last summer. Time is about an hour and a half each way.

Make sure to stop in at Lutsen Lodge (beautiful Northwood's Lodge), and take a run up Lutsen Mountain to enjoy lunch and a beer at Papa Charlie's (fun restaurant and bar, with spectacular views and live music)!

1) Take note to shift over onto Old 61 at north end of Duluth for the shoreline drive ... not the divided highway to Two Harbors.
2) Notice that the Gunflint is an absolute dead end in the wilderness, but that Hwy 1 to Ely lets you loop elsewhere if you wish.
3) Also check the parkways along the hilltops of Duluth for great views of the city and lake.

Nice road and the scenery was certainly beautiful. The air is crisp and the Lake is breathtaking. Did the ride at the end of May and about froze my fingers off.

This is a must-do trip. If you can, try it in late September or early October. The scenery is fantastic at any time, but the fall colors and cool days add a great element to the ride. Definitely five stars!

Spectacular ride with lots to see and do along the way. Put this one on your bucket list. If you do the infamous Lake Superior Circle Tour you will be on this route.

I agree with a previous post - the ride around all the way around the lake to Sault Ste. Marie is great. Also another place for accommodations and fine dining (if a bit pricey) is the Naniboujou Lodge. See: https://www.naniboujou.com/

Great ride, don't forget to stop a the Rustic for great food. If your going back to the metro from there. Take 23 south out of Duluth through the park and round the curves. Much more scenic and relaxing.

Absolutely stunning, a very scenic, beautiful and a learning experience. You can continue the ride across the Canadian border (if you have a passport) But even if you don't, there's plenty to do and see on the "state" side. From the lighthouse at Split-Rock to several state park and waterfalls, it's a dream ride. The views of the coastal line is amazing, and there are plenty of places where you can pull over and admire the views of Gitchee Goomie. Pack for cooler weather, as even in July, I wish it was a little chilly on the bike and I noticed most of the biker community wearing leathers.

Very scenic ride along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Traffic can be heavy at times and you will want to dress for the cooler lake effect temperatures.
