I am so excited to have found this site. I am glad to share that the Stow Corner Store is now open! I opened the doors July 2010. The Bakery is in full swing as well as the ice cream. The menu offers a full service deli and special features daily. The House Italian is a 2 ft sub, mortadella, salami, capacola, provolone, lettuce, tomato, green peppers, red onions, black olives, pickles, and hots if desired topped with oil and vinegar house dressing. This sub can be made smaller :) Please check out homemade soups, always fresh served with hot crusty bread or crackers. I am looking forward to my second summer. Please consider taking the ride up route 113 out of Fryeburg, Maine to Stow while heading to Evans Notch. I hope everyone has a safe 2011. Best Regards, Maureen

Please note the locals call this Evans Notch Road and was closed to traffic due to flooding washing out bridges rwo years ago. There are campgrounds on either end and a historical house to visit on the Fryeburg end. ( Note the author of the ride improperly abbreviated Maine MN it's ME Keep the rubber side down !

A real highlight of this road was the discover of Stow Corner Cafe - what a delight. Great coffee and crumb cake and a warm welcome from the local people drinking in there. We'd ride the road again just to visit the cafe again. We were a bit disappointed with this road itself though - in places the pavement was so rough that the riding was not at all pleasant. There were some good patches too though.

I rode this a couple of weeks ago, from Fryeburg to Gilead, then on to Rumford. Lots of twisties, however pavement is poor is spots. Area through Evans Notch has fresh pavement, so it can be squirrely. Easy morning is quite dewy,so watch your speeds in the twisties.

As others have noted, this is a great scenic road with lots of great curves, elevation changes and straights. Even more impressive in the September/October when the leaves are changing. The section through the White Mountains National Park was recently repaved, so it's very smooth too. Note that several sections are not maintained during the winter months, and in fact, the National Park section is gated off during winter. Also, the existing pavement condition south of the Park can be fairly poor in places.

I've ridden this road many times, including late Spring this year (2012). Rte 113 through Evans Notch is a ROUGH piece of road. A few years ago it was acceptable but this stretch of road through the notch is closed in the winter and takes a pounding from the Maine winter. There are SO many great roads in Maine that you don't have to accept this one. The scenery is nice on this route, but it needs pavement resurfacing.

This route is an Excellent non-weekend/ off season ride. In season there are alot of campers, hikers concintrated on northern end and varied wildlife etc found and seen along the whole ride. The road can be narrow at times. Starting in Fryeburg there are open fields and mixed small clusters of farms new and old. As you slowly climb north the terrain and road can be be a bit rough in spots but not bad. people talk about the veiw from the top but its the vistas getting there that are best for me.The northern end is dominated by the on and off old style national forest roads which are closed in the winter. Understand this isn't a freeway but a one of a kind return to the past. if your looking for big roads and Moose head to NH.... Fellow riders this is mountain riding at its best and worst depending on traffic and weather. I grew up in this area and have lived on both ends of this road and when i return for a ride this for me is part of a loop i make. Sarting Fryeburg 113 through the notch then Route 2 heading to Gorham NH then turn Left to pass the base of Mt Washington into Conway NH then back to Fryeburg. enjoy.

I have been riding for over 40 years. I really enjoy this route. if you like getting back to nature and a wonderful ride through the white mountains at slowewr speeds, then this is for you.If you want to be cruzin at 50 or higher, then this probably isn't for you. I noticed several turn off\rest points along the way.

Bad, broken pavement - overall it's a wooded road... nothing special.

I have been riding for over thirty years and have all over Maine and this has always been my favorite place along with up thru EVEN'S NOTCH.In the summer it is beautiful..in the fall..it takes your breth away.Be careful of the leaf peepers..keep it slow.My absolute favorite is fall,at night..watch for wet leaves.

I've ridden this one a few times over the years and in 2018 I didn't really enjoy it that much. Because of all the shade it stays damp longer than the surrounding roads and it's pretty bumpy, just not that fun for the sport side of touring. We wen up to the look out a second time when it was dry and it was better but not a highlight. I actually thought it was a better cycling road so I pedaled up to the lookout and really enjoyed it but for the motorcycle I'll stay away.

Great during the fall for the colors. Often times when you stop at the scenic overlook at the top, you can see rock climbers across the valley on the mountain face, but only if you look closely! :)
