I grew up in Leavenworth and live in Kansas City, KS and so I have been on this road many, many times. My favorite riding road in the area! But don't miss out on Wyandotte Lake! As you pass Lakeside and get to the 435 ramp, just pass the ramp and follow the signs to the lake. It's a BEAUTIFUL ride around the lake, lots of twists and turns and beautiful scenery. I think it's a hidden treasure in Wyandotte!

Very nice ride considering where we live. One word of caution -- when traveling north on this road, there is a sign on a hill warning of a stop ahead. Trust me, there is a stop ahead just as you top the next hill, and it's immediate. Another interesting feature of this road -- if you stay on it all the way to Lansing/Leavenworth, you'll pass between the Kansas state prisons, mens and womens I believe, and you'll pass by the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Pretty impressive.

What the others said, but ... BE CAUTIOUS! This can be a deadly piece of road for motorcyclists. Almost every riding season some rider buys the farm on this road. Pay close attention to the advisory speeds on the curves, and watch out for loose gravel--there are several intersecting gravel driveways that spew out loose gravel as a trap for riders. But don't let this keep you away, it really is a fun road to ride!

I rode this ride this weekend after reading this site. All the hills kept the wind at bay. I agree this is a great curvy little road. I want to add what everyone else said and be cautious. Some jerk off in a truck decided he needed both lane when going around a curve. It wouldn't have been as bad but I had my wife on the back. I gave him a nice salute with one of my fingers.
I asked my dad about the highway and he said that there has been a share of wrecks on it. So my 3 tips are watch your speed, watch the road, and watch for idiots.

I just stumbled on this route on the same day I discovered this web site. Both are great finds and during the end of October the colors were awesome to see. I will be doing this one again soon

After reading about this piece of road, I had the opportunity to ride it over the weekend. What a blast! Very entertaining to ride. I will echo what others have said before: Some level of caution is required as there are lots of short blind rises and some with corners following them. Ride this if you are craving a technical ride, this is not your leisurely Sunday cruise.

This road is a slice of heaven! You need to be aware of changing conditions (dirt, gravel, etc.) and keep your speed reasonable as you do pass a number of small farms, but even then, this line-up of twisties is a joy! I too continue beyond I-435 and enjoy a few more twists and turns before emerging near the dog race track.
Also try Mission Road south of 151st if in the SE side of Kansas City!

This is our little corner of heaven in Kansas. Seems like everytime we leave home (Leavenworth, KS) we take 5 Highway to get where we are going. It is a beautiful ride!!!

we ride highway 5 all the time! when taking Hwy 5 south, we pass by the I-435 crossing and keep going on the county road (rather than get on the interstate) and it turns into 98th street, then 97th street, and comes out on Leavenworth Rd (Hwy 5) near the Wyandot County Park entrance.

I've ridden this many times. It has a lot of hidden turns and elevation changes. It is a great ride but you have to watch closely for oncoming traffic. Narrow road with lots of shade! The corners have caught a lot of people off guard and they ended up on the ground or in a field.

It's the most interesting way to get from Leavenworth to KCK, and probably the closest thing to a twisty in the entirety of Kansas. It's more fun than challenging, though there is a turn just after 107th street heading west that is deceptively dangerous. A lot of people blast down the straightaway near the racetrack and the short series of curves following it are easy and fun, but complacency on the corner just after 107th puts a lot of people into the oncoming lane if they're not ready for an actual corner. Another danger when heading west is the hill approaching the 123rd/McIntyre instersection. There are two signs indicating a stop sign approaching, though they are sometimes obscured by the trees. The stop sign is IMMEDIATELY over the crest of the hill and appears suddenly if you don't know it's there. Going east from Leavenworth before noon can put the sun in your eyes at inopportune times, but in my experience the tighter curves are easier to approach when going east. If you're riding during the weekday you need to watch out for the occasional 18-wheeler who let his GPS lead him astray, and if you're riding on the weekend watch for cars crowding the centerline. Others have mentioned gravel from driveways, but I've never really found that to be an issue. There are parts of the road where the shoulder drops steeply into a deep, rocky ditch, and at least one place near the 123rd/McIntyre instersection that always seems to be in need of, or is under, repair. From the Veteran's Administration south entrance to the Wyandotte Lake Park west entrance takes between 10 to 15 minutes under optimal to normal traffic.
