This route is a nice alternative to slabbing endlessly through the corn fields of IL. I chose this route as a more scenic means of getting from Chi to StL (over I55). It dumps you out not far from Fast Eddy's which is an absolute must!
When we came through it was an absolute monsoon! By the time we got to the Grafton BP I could feel water sloshing around in my boots. (We stayed on 100 through Pere Marquette State Park)
There wasn't many opportunities to stop though. There was one 2 pump gas station a half hour or so before Grafton, but it didn't have an awning or any coverage so I kept going. There are a few parks along the way with pavilions, we probably should have stopped there and waited the storm out.
I've done I55 many of times and it's tiring. You just drone on and on, and on. With this route you at least get some trees, state parks, the IL river, and some turns in to break the monotony. Going north IL 24 to Peoria and 26 will get you close to I80 & Starved Rock. Something to consider. Great alternative if you have the time.

A buddy and I rode this route in August. Chilly in the morning but turned out to be a beautiful day. This ride was great. We took all day but stopped a lot along the way. I would recommend this to anyone. Plan it so you can stop in Grafton for a while. You will see lots of other motorcycles there as well.

Nice road but the Missouri side of the river is better.

Alton established a 'low noise zone' so keep it down while passing through. Beautiful ride along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Great food stops along the way. Plenty of fuel stops also. Roadway is in pretty good condition. Cross over the Hardin lift bridge and head south to Brussels. Stop at the Inn for FABULOUS family style home cooked food. Back over the Brussels Ferry to the Great River Road and back to Alton. LOVE THIS RIDE!!!

This is a nice ride indeed! Prefer the fall colors myself...gorgeous then. Some nice county roads also that you can take as a variation. One I like is from is from Detroit north that comes out just east of Griggsville, then right to Valley City, then left to Chambersburg, then right again on IL RT 104 to 100. Fast Eddies is one of my wife's favorite places to relax to nice music and get some good cheap grub!!

After crossing the Kampsville Ferry, if you go into Hardin, Illinois (10 miles from Ferry) and go 2 0r 3 blocks past the bridge (rte 100) there is "The Riverdock Resturant" on the left. They have very good food and the pies are fabulous.

As you enter Gafton turn left at first road and go down to the river to a place called the Loading Dock. Has great food, drinks, and is right on the water. It also has a fea market on most weekends.

Thanks for adding this route. It's a great ride, and I highly recommend Fast Eddie's, The Loading Dock, and the Kampsville ferry. This route would make an excellent fall run.

Enjoyed actually seeing the river, most of Great River Road has been switched to a newer inland road. The bluffs and bottom lands are much more delightful. Surprised when we passed the first of the caves they've mined in the bluffs. Riding along on a hot day, and suddenly the temperature changes by about 15 degrees colder! The ferry was fun. Got to watch some of the river traffic up and down.

In leaving St. Louis, I took 100 from Alton, IL all the way until it re-joined 67 back into Macomb, IL. 100 is great for following the Illinois River and has several small towns with easy bike access, as well as some state parks to stop at as well.
