While attending the 100 year HD Anniversary in Milwaukee in 2003, I ran into these two biker-guys from Germany. They'd come for the birthday bash but as soon as it was over they were headed to Arizona for the sole purpose of riding the Coronado Trail. I immediately put the CT on my "to-do" list, and did it for the first time the following year. Sweepers to the north, undulating pine-lined straights in the middle and technical twisties to the south.
Be advised - while I highly recommend this road for experienced riders, it needs to be said that the southern section is not recommended for beginners especially riding it from north to south - it's very steep and very twisty once it begins dropping off the rim and heading for the desert below. My recommendation, no matter your riding level, is that you try to arrange your route to do Hwy 191 from south to north. Doing so will allow you to stay off your brakes and enjoy the scenery more, and there is plenty of that!

Actually the road begins in Safford and has nice sweeping curves into Clifton and then actually terminates in Springerville, AZ.. So in reality it is 165 miles and over 450 curves and switchbacks. It offers the experienced technical rider everything needed in a good ride, Haripins, Long Sweepers and directionals. Gas up in Clifton or your next chance is in Alpine. Stop for trhe World famous Pie at the Bear Wallow Cafe in Alpine. Most Importantly BE CAREFEULL, this road will bite back and is not for the faint of heart. So please respect it!. those of us Natives will always call it the "Devil's Highway since the US Route designator changed from 666 to 191 some years ago. it makes Deals Gap ( Tail of the Dragon) and the Pigs Trail in Arkansas, although fun not even in the same ballpark. Some c'mon out to AZ and Dance on the Devil's Highway with us!

What an amazing drive from Clifton To Eagar, AZ. This road will test your technical driving abilities on each and every curve. The first 25 - 30 miles is straight up with neck wrenching twists and turns and while a person could go faster, DON'T. The rest of 80 or so miles remains twisty with a few sweepers and a short straight of way not far from Hannagan Meadows. The last 20 miles into Eagar is at highway speeds, but watch out for farm equipment.
Reasons not do drive fast. First, rocks fall and there were many corners where you needed to avoid large rocks and gravel in the middle of the travel lane. Secondly, as many others alluded to, traffic can slow to a crawl and you won't know that until you are well into your curve. Additionally, when I went (mid-Oct), the traffic consisted mostly of large pickups with travel trailers that could not avoid drifting over the lines. Next are critters. Squirrels, skunks, deer, elk, and the fifteen cows that decided to take a break in the middle of the road. Watchout for the one with crooked horns (1 up/ 1 down), she was irritable. Didn't see any elk, but I know they are out there. Finally, the scenery is breath taking. Go too fast and you will miss it.
All total, my drive from Clifton to Eagar took nearly 4 hours with plenty of kodak moments and breaks.

South to North, starting on Morenci, you get to experience 525 twisty turns and breathtaking panoramic views-all within 70 miles! We had 14 people and 11 bikes in all, ranging from semi-experienced to riders that were almost born on bikes... We stopped along the way at Hannagan Meadow Lodge, where the lodge rooms were decorated in different themes, there's even a honeymoon suite. The next day, we continued on to Alpine, but the road from Morenci to the lodge is so AMAZING! I even got a picture of a deer that we stopped and had a conversation with (almost) before she ran away. This has to be one of the most wonderful rides I've ever been on! And nuts to those that don't want to call it the Devil's highway... just because it used to be called Highway 666. I got my pin that says I rode the Devil's Highway, you can too!
There are no 'amenities' like a roadside table, leave those to the 'Interstaters'... There are, however places to pull over and look out over mountains, stretch, grab your picnic, talk to deer, but there is a lodge along the way, Hannagan Meadows Lodge. Google it... Oh yah, gas up before you leave Morenci, and take it easy, because there are no gas stations until you get to Alpine!
Make sure you call for road conditions before you head out on this trek! And make sure you get your "I rode the Devil's Highway" pin or key-chain.

Eagerly awaited this ride, after first attempt was aborted by snow at Easter 2008. Took north to south route in September 2009 and was not dissappointed. Beautiful scenery, twisties go on forever, huge elevation change. Take extreme care on the bends though, especially on a cruiser. Harley rider 5mins ahead of me misjudged the bend and flew into abyss. Rider was okay, bike probably took a while to retrieve. Highly recommended, but be careful, plan for time, gas and weather. Next time will take northbound route.

Wow! Great ride! I rode the three sisters 2 months ago and enjoyed this road even more. Lots and lots of twisties with awesome views around every corner. The drop offs are a bit scarey so be careful and keep your eyes on the road! Definately worth traveling to this part of Arizona.

This was a great ride! We started in Tucson and went up through Safford then up to Coronado Trail, then we went over to Show Low, down to Globe and back home, about 540 mile ride all in one day!! Coronado Trail was the best part, overall the road was great, going south to north it has a lot of gravel on the first 1/4 of the Trail. Going through Morenci was really cool and really tricky, those turns are really tight, really not for beginners. It was really fun and we had a great time. This is one road you have to do at least once if you have a bike, it will challenge you and be a blast, I was scrapping floorboards all over the place!! Hands down the best ride I have done!

Truly a fantastic road! All the good things posted on here are true. I started on the North end in Eagar, AZ and did "the loop" (catching the 180 south in Alpine to the 78, then north on the 191). The road quality on the 191 was very good. The views are AMAZING. I saw a total of 3 cars on the 191 once I left the Clifton area. BE WARNED: I counted 27 deer on the Hwy once sunset began.
There's really nothing I can add that hasn't already been posted. But I can confirm what everyone has already said... It's a bucket list, must do road that tops my favorite list.

I had only ridden dirt bikes before deciding I wanted a V-Rod. I found the one I wanted in Tucson and flew there from DFW to make the purchase and ride home. A friend advised me that I could not pass by the Devil's Highway without riding it. So I jumped on the Harley for the first time and rode south to north. WOW, what a ride. I scraped the pegs going around the turns a time or two. I saw only a few other bikes taking the trail. It's as good as everyone says and I'm so pleased I worked it into my ride home. I had only put maybe 50 street miles before buying the V-Rod and 2 days later I had put on 1000 miles and concurred the Devil's Highway. I highly recommend, regardless of your experience level, just be careful.

Great ride. The longest non stop twisty road I've encountered, but not the best.
Cattle guards are frequent, as are pot holes and tar snakes, road surface was bad. Stay alert, have fun. There was very little traffic, but a fair amount of what there was, was in my lane.
89, from Congress to Prescott, Prescott Valley to Jerome, 5*.

Definitely worth all the hype! Drove from Phoenix area to Alpine, stayed the night and then did the loop ( 180, 78, 191) and it was amazing to say the least. We saw maybe 5 cars total coming North to South and no cars or bikes in front or behind us during the entire trip going South to North after leaving Morenci. Road quality was great and views were nothing short of spectacular. Weather was beautiful blue skies and not super hot in the south and a very nice 65 or so in Alpine.
I will be making the trip again next year and hopefully recruit some people to enjoy the ride as this is one of those places that need to be experienced and enjoyed.

This stretch of road is truly phenomenal. It lives up to all of the hype that has been written about it. Riding the Highway to Hell will keep your attention riveted to the roadway most of the time. Be sure to have your raingear handy. We ran into a massive downpour with good-sized hail and had to pull over at the first place we found. Highly recommended stretch of road! I'm doing it again this year but this time I'm taking a group of 25 riders to experience just how awesome it truly is.

I am very fortunate to keep my 94 VFR750 at a relative's house in Phoenix, and rode "666" last August. I was "geared up" for warm weather, but riding in the ealy AM from Phoenix to Alpine, even in August..let me tell you, I wished for a jacket. There were GIANT pines at alpine (go figure) and you expected to meet the "Marborogh Man" around every bend while riding the high meadows. The distant views were breath-taking, and the road never dissapointed. You need to watch your gas tank and milage, because skipping a town, may put you at a very low fuel state. The descent into the desert requires strict attenntion, and the caution, "watch out for sand or gravel where the mountain washes over the road" is a good caution. The descent into Morenci and the copper mine is awesome (watch for big horn sheep near the mine)....as is driving back through Globe. Be sure to hydrate often...The dry desert will suck it out of you. I'm doing it again this summer...Great ride.

Coming from Germany I had to ride this road. I did drive it in South North direction and as my base point is Safford AZ nearby I made the ride into a loop by going back south via Luna NM and Reserve, to Mule Creek and 3 Way near Clifton.
This is spectakular road that anyone who has teh opportunity to ride a motorcycle in in East Arizona should have the chance to experience. It is like a 3 hours roller coaster ride (never ending fun. Of course with a light european bike that is made for speed and curves this is a additional pleasure. I love this road.

I really liked this road better then the Dragon. It is longer and just as many curves and you can see the scenery if you dare take your eyes off the road,or stop. The highway is actually US 191.Stop in Morenci at the Texas BBQ for lunch.A true Texan with years of experence.

Truly a wonderful road. Very challenging tho, so do not go alone. No guardrails and steep drop offs for the unwary. Road surface is variable in places with some very slippy patches of fine gravel (May 08), but you can usually see these in time: black asphalt with suspicious surface! heading North after Hannagan Meadow, you can really let it rip, but watch for elk. Wear safety gear, this is a road for the more experienced rider.

This is truly one of the premier motorcycle roads in US! We have ridden it twice with little to no traffic, good roads great views, great smells and lots of hills and turns to keep it interesting. If you are in Springerville at the North end, stay at the Rode Inn. Very biker friendly, nice rooms, good breakfast and good rates.

Great route! Pretty much "the road" motorcycle builders have in mind when designing bikes! Just watch for gravel and rocks in some of the tight corners. Also, if you're riding at dawn or dusk watch for Elk! Those suckers are huge, and I've seen them standing in the middle of that road.

I've ridden this 3 times, starting in Alpine, AZ (24 hour credit card gas pump in Alpine) and going South through AZ dropping from 8700 ' to 3600' in Morenci. Wearing pucks you can take every corner at 50 save 3 doglegs which require 5-10 mph.
No food in AZ south that of Alpine; couple of bars on NM return

I have >200,000 miles under my tires and this is the most challenging paved ride I've ever done. I've done the "Tail of the Dragon" and thought it was a joke. Unlike that kiddie ride, this route is 100 miles (vs 11) of first-gear hairpins, mid-gear sweepers, and top-gear straightaways. There are any number of tight off-camber and decreasing radius curves. (As opposed to the stupid "Tail" that is all nice well cambered sweepers. Stack it on that road, and you deserve the tree of shame.)
There are also plenty of places where, if you leave the road you won't stop for several hundred feet down wooded hillside. It is unpatrolled on weekends and in weather. There are no services between Morenci and Hannigan's Meadow, and nothing resembling EMT's between Morenci and Alpine. Stack it and you will wait hours for help.
When combined with a loop through Mule Creek NM and US180. This is an excellent all-day romp.

I actually rode the Coronado Trail back in 2007, but it will be in my great rides memory bank forever. What a great road this is, it definitely lives up to its 5 star billing. Unfortunately I took this road late in the day and had to hurry to make it up to Springerville before dark (didn't make it). All I can say for now is that I can't wait to ride it again and give myself a whole day to do it, maybe even ride it, turn around and ride it again, it is that good. That is assuming I am not worn out from it, lots of tight hair turns on the south end and to much scenery throughout to take in all at one time. It is open range so watch out for cattle and every other 4 legged critter in the area, in fact I had a close encounter with a herd of elk just after dark just south of Alpine. If you are into camping this would be a great ride to find a campground, pitch a tent and enjoy nature at its best. If not, at least take a break at Hannagan Meadows along the way, grab a snack or possibly stay the night and visit with other fellow riders. Ride safe and enjoy.

In my opinion this is the finest motorcycle road in the country. I've ridden it many times and it presents a challenge even for the skilled rider. At the beginning there is a sign that reads.....no police services for the next 85 miles......good with me. Note, this road is not for beginner riders. I posted the a map of the loop you should ride in the photos section. My suggestion is at least a two night stay in Alpine AZ. There is a hidden gem of a hotel-lodge called the Tal Wi Wi in Alpine. I recommend the updated rooms with a hot tub. This is a good 4 star establishment and watching the elk in the morning is an added bonus. Many riders profess the Dragon as the ultimate destination, but I assure you it can't compare to the devils highway 191. 191 is a highly technical ride that is isolated with very few cars if any. No cell service either. Try not to ride it alone. Watch for animals. Enjoy!

After making it to AZ, I had to ride the Coronado Trail and did so in May of 2020. First, let me clear up some previous comments on this route. There ARE NOT 1200 hairpin turns. (180 degree turns that are shaped like the end of a bobby pin used in women's hair) Maybe 20 but lots of sweepers. The northern route is cool and was devastated by a forest fire in 2010. Temps were in the 70s in the north and we saw 103 in Morenci. I rode a BMW K1600GTL with a passenger (both of us 200 pounds). We rode the primary route down and then rode to Three Way then took 78 north to 180 and back to Eager. We spent the night in Eager, rode the trail and returned to our same hotel at the end of the day. Most things were closed due to Covid. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY. The contrast in temps, elevations, landscape, wildlife, the copper mine in Morenci was extraordinary. Traffic was near nothing, meaning some stretches we would go for miles without seeing another vehicle. Gas was not a problem if you start full in Eager and top off in Morenci. Saw eagles, elk, coyote, two dead snakes on the road, wonderful cactus flowers in the south. The copper mine looks like something from star wars with trucks the size of houses and the mine fills your vision from horizon to horizon with beautiful reds/browns. I would absolutely do this route again. It was a full day of riding, but it is the kind of ride you wake up to the next day and ask yourself if it was a dream.

The road is an absolute blast to drive and the scenery some of the best I enjoyed in my 7000 mile bucket list trip across the country. The open pit copper mine was unbelievable it went on and on. But back to the scenery, green trees against salmon colored rocks was absolutely beautiful. Riding along the side of the mountain with great corners made this one of my top ten runs out of the 7000 miles. If you can include it in your rides you should.

Rode this southbound on Nov 6th, 2021 on a rented '18 Suzuki SV 650 rolling on Dunlop Sport Maxx GPR 300 tires. Very technical, very twisty, fantastic views and tons of elevation change. The road conditions, however, can be pretty poor at times...particularly in the heavily-wooded, lower-3rd section between Alpine and Morenci. Very few (if any) potholes but plenty of pitted tar snakes and mid-turn patches of broken asphalt. Apex of hairpins, particularly right-handers near shoulder, can be gravelly, as there's no road shoulder to speak-of so forest dirt encroaches right up to outer white line. I'm 36yrs old and rode this with my 74yr old father who was on a '21 V-Strom 650. We both enjoyed it and would highly recommend, just be ready to ride carefully and expect poor road conditions. We both drifted wide a couple times and had some rear tire slide moments. The effort was exhausting so stay sharp and ride within your limits. I recommend going NORTH-bound so you're climbing in elevation, thus powering UPHILL most of the way, rather than descending through gravelly hairpins.

Rode Coronado Trail yesterday. What a thrill! Rode south with a passenger and about 100 lbs of gear on the bike, so it was quite a workout. But well worth it. The scenery is incredible until you exit the Apache National forest, when you cross the Morenci copper mine. That is an incredible sight of an entirely different kind.
My lady and I are already planning a camping trip near Alpine next year. I'm looking forward to doing this one again - will probably pair it with a run north on US 180 in NM so we can do the whole loop.
Happy riding!

Nearly 400 switchbacks and curves in 110 miles! Just right for hard acceleration and braking but so ignore some of the 10mph signs....there’s a reason. This is a bucket list ride for anyone on 2 wheels traveling in the Southwest. We lived in Phoenix for many years and this became a fall and spring overnighted for many years. Make sure you do it in both directions....no services between Alpine and Morenci other than Hannigan Meadows and that isn’t guaranteed. Alpine is a great overnight stay with several rustic motels and very good restaurants within walking distance. The scenery is amazing, you’ll think you’re in the middle of nowhere and you are! The pavement never disappoints!

Just an update on current road quality - lots of loose gravel on the road right now in sections, not enough to make the bike slip on turns, but enough to make you pucker and slow down a bit. Did see some cows on the berm and some mule deer so watch for critters. The bridge just north of Morenci was closed for a month or so in March 2019, but it's open now. The road closer to the mine in in great shape. Stay at the Hannagan Meadow Lodge - nice historic inn with cabins also - they serve breakfast , lunch and dinner.

This road has some amazing twisties! I did this as part of a 1400 mile loop out of Lubbock, TX . Just out of Morenci, there was a detour, and sketchy road conditions at best. A couple of miles in, it turned into the best set of curves I've ever been on. I found myself wising I had brought a sport bike. Watch out for the wildlife! I came out of a corner, and found myself face to face with a big horn sheep. Closer to Morenci, it was wonderfully tight and technical, but opened up into really neat sweepers towards Alpine. The Bear Wallow in Alpine had great food with friendly staff. Overall it was a great road with lots of pretty country, next to no traffic, and plenty of places to drag the pegs.
