The route from US 64 (The Old Copper Road) traveling north on hwy 30 to Reliance, TN is a beautiful ride. Plenty of tight turns and sweepers, mixed in with a few straight-aways that allow you a view of the farms and many, outwardly appearing, ramshackle homes that dot the area.
Note: This is also a nice ride before the foliage appears, as you are afforded glimpses of the homes and churches and the like that sit back off the roadway - the ones you otherwise miss when everything is in full bloom.
A good portion of this route is canopied by Mother Nature so it makes for a nice ride on a hot day, too.
When I reach the Hiwassee River in Reliance, I like to turn onto 315 and head north, instead of continuing on 30 to hwy 411.
[If you'd like to take a short break here, follow the signs to Reliance Fly & Tackle, just about a mile off of 315. Here you'll find a convenience store where you can buy a cold beverage and enjoy it on their covered rear deck!]
Continue north on hwy 315 and enjoy the ride all the way up to Monroe county. 315 ends at hwy 39 (Mecca Pike) where a right turn (east) will take you to hwy 68, just a half mile north of Tellico Plains and the incredible Cherohala Skyway.
Continuing south on hwy 68 will take you all the way through to Ducktown, where you intersect hwy 64 (the same hwy where this ride started). Turn onto hwy 64 west (toward Cleveland, TN) and you're soon riding alongside the Ocoee River. This area can become somewhat congested with white water enthusiasts on the weekends.
A few more miles downriver you'll once again intersect hwy 30 where you started off.
Without stops this ride takes about 2 hours and runs under 90 miles.
