The Suches Loop makes a nice day ride from Atlanta, and the curves are a lot of fun. For me, Wolfpen Gap Rd. was dicey not because of how narrow it is, but because of the gravel/sand down the middle of the lane the entire 11 miles of the road. Due to the high potential for spinout (and the major consequences of such a spinout), I couldn't really punch through the curves like I would have liked. This debris may be just because of recent snow/ice and hopefully will get cleaned off as the season progresses. Hwy. 129 was in much better condition and uncrowded on a weekday, so I was able to challenge myself more on that section.

The Suches Loop is a "rider definable" road, in that it has multiple segments with different scales of difficulty, since it's comprised of four line roads, two lane roads, high adrenalin segmnets, such as Wolf Pen Gap road, significant changes in elevation depending on the segment you take, as well as an almost infinite number of peripheral roads and highways, such as the Richard Russell, that can keep you entertained ad infinitum. The scenery is spectacular (particularly in the fall). You need to watch out after rain storms, for sand and loose gravel/debris in the road.

These are great roads to ride but be fore warned: All of these roads are business and residential routes for the local and slow moving traffic is the norm on both weekends and weekdays and there are not a lot of passing zones. So, be patient and if you want to "play in the curves" and get behind slow traffic, pull over and wait for the occasional gap in traffic. Then have fun!

This is THE RIDE!!! Growing up we used to spend entire days riding this loop. You WILL like this loop more than "The" Dragon. Less crowded, less commercial and every bit of (if not more) fun. Be CAREFUL right after a rain... lots of stuff washes on the road on 180.

WOW!! I have only been riding 3 years and just 4 months on my Suzuki Intruder 1500. My wife and I rode Hwy. 19 and Hwy. 60 from Dalonega thru Morganton. I have to say that I was riding WAY above my skill level. I learned a lot about riding very quick. I found myself mentally exhausted and ready for some straight rodes by the time I get to Morganton. It was a wonderful ride and I hope to do it again soon.

Dales at the intersection of 180 and 60 is a very Motorcycle oriented gas/food stop. They are especially friendly to riders and very reasonably priced. Good rest facilities with lots of BS'ing bikers.

I have traveled all over the Appalachians trails and this is one of my favorites. Challenging ride, but very relaxing and enjoyable with incredible scenery. I highly recommend for everyone including beginners but know your capabilities and limitations. If you don't know yet, you will by the time you finish.

Great ride through the mountains of Georgia, those looking for a longer ride might head over and add the Richard B. Russell scenic Hwy into Helen for lunch before swinging back through to Dahlonega.

Our first Georgia ride and what a ride it was. Beautiful scenery and great roads. Watch out for bikes around some of the sharp curves. Two Wheels of Suches was a GREAT place to stop and stretch your legs. Well worth the afternoon. My wife, a horse lover, even wants to do it again. Can't wait to get back up and do the Extended ride.

It was a challenging ride. A little crowded, and cars do cross double yellow, so use caution. The few chances I had to look at the view generated pure, WOW's. I was mentally exhausted at the end of the ride.

Such a fun ride! The Wolf Pen Gap Rd has recently been replaced and is nice and smooth now. Watch out still for loose gravel that washes down the mountains tho.

Rode this ride on July 4th, and it was awsome. The trees provided pretty good shade, and the recommended stops were friendly and good food. If your not a experienced going on a holiday is not a good idea, the traffic was very crowded and has some very aggressive drivers. Riding in the fall or if your headed to Helen for Octoberfest its much better views. Overall very fun and a challenge for all riders.

Did this ride today 9/29/2010 and it was a really nice ride, will do the extended loop next time but for a day trip from Atlanta this is the best ride going. the roads are well maintained, the stops are good, the people friendly. Gonna take a camera next trip.

Great riding anywhere in the area & beyond. I get up here every other month as I have my 2nd home in the area. I have been riding these roads for years have never been bored. Little traffic on week days but the cycle traffic does get thick during weekends & holidays. 129 seems to get the most attention as it gets very techincal the closer it get to Blood mountain. Very curvy & fast. Be sure to visit Turners Corner for lunch @ 129 & 180

Nice, challenging road. However, it is populated and has regular car traffic as well as side roads and driveways and a couple of parks at the end of the first part of the ride. If you can get on when nobody is in front of you, there are some pretty challenging twisties. You will also meet some very aggressive riders from time to time.

Been there once before, and going back up tomorrow. My first time awhile back I don't even know what road we were on, but it was a great first bike trip and unforgettable. Going back up and defeat the whole thing. If your ever in Helen, take the trip over the mountain and be prepared for some smooth beautiful roads and scenery. Long sweeping curves and some sharpuns to. Ride safe everybody.

This is a road that emphasises the old saw "ride your own ride"- you must know the limits of your ability and your bike's performance in the twisties or you'll be in trouble on the Wolf Pen, but the challenge and the scenery are worth it. Best done at low traffic times, especially if on a cruiser.

I rode this loop on October 29, 2019. This is a triangle circuit with a tail leading south to Dahlonega. I followed the route as described: North out of Dahlonega to the GA60 intersection then counterclockwise (left) to GA180 and then back south on US19 to the starting point. Dahlonega is a decent start point as it's the last place for much of any amenities. And anything can be had there: lodging, fuel, food, services, etc. I had a gorgeous Fall day with party cloudy skies and temps in the mid-70s. Along most of the route, colors were still fairly green but heading east along GA180 the trees were spectacular, probably due to the higher elevation. All of the road on this circuit is in exceptional condition with clean painted lines and smooth asphalt. The trees were still thick with foliage and there are almost no turn-offs to stop so sights were, for the most part, veiled. GA60 is a twisty up-hill two-lane and if you get behind a slug, it can be a bummer. I stopped at Two Wheels Only but they appeared to be shut down for the season. GA180 east from GA60 starts off straight, level and sparse residential. But after a few miles, it gets nice and curvy. No noted gravel as described in previous reports and we had over 4 inches of rain a few days earlier 40 miles southwest (as the crow flies). Also, I didn't perceive the road to be narrow - standard width from what I could tell. Once back to US19, I took the right turn to head back south to Dahlonega. This in fact, is a three lane road with two lanes heading up-hill (going north) and a single lane heading south (down-hill). Southbound has the occasional "Slower traffic turn off" sign every so many miles so if a slug is courteous, they can pull over and let everyone behind pass. And surprisingly, most did! At the intersection of US19 and US129, I stopped at "Riverside Tavern" for lunch. Thumbs up with BBQ ribs on a covered outdoor patio overlooking a nice flow of water. Craft beers too if so inclined. If in the area, this route is definitely worth a go.

This is a great area for motorcycle riding both street riding and the gravel/dirt forest service roads. Our group goes up from Milton, Fl. at least twice yearly to ride the paved twisties and the dirt.
The forest service roads on dual sport and some adventure bikes are outstanding.
Dale's at the Suches intersection has all the info you would ever need for rides, lodging, camping, rv parks, food and general bench racing from hundreds of riders.

Fun Ride! Road quality is excellent - although shoulder is quite thin. Plenty of twisties- some rated as slow as 10mph. Did this on a HD Street Glide with a passenger and it was lots of fun - but I was wishing I was on my sport bike. Dense forests, a few scenic outlooks. If doing this in fall would avoid weekends. Lots of good riding between Helen and Dahlonaga

Incredible route, this was my first experience of real twisty roads as a new rider (6000 miles). The roads were clean except for tar snakes on the first quarter of the route and the forest and mountain scenery is gorgeous. Lots of cool places to stop and checkout, and there are a few small gas stations along the route, though I recommend gassing up in Dahlonega before you hit the route. I was definitely leaning off the bike a ton and was very sore in the legs the next day.
Wolfpen Gap Rd. does have a steep downgrade into some serious turns, so make sure you watch out for that. I found myself doing some serious trail braking into the apex because I misjudged my speed downhill.
Saturday afternoon wasn't too busy, but there were quite a few slower vehicles who refused to use the slow vehicle pull-offs, so watch out for other motorcyclists making passes. Most cars were nice and waved me by, though.
I did not see a single police car on the entire route, which was nice. I have two big warnings to anyone riding this route:
1. There are idiots crossing the double yellows pretty frequently, mostly car drivers taking turns too fast and overshooting the turn, so REALLY be on guard for that. Seemed to be tourists having fun in their minivans and not realizing what speed is required to make a tight turn. I saw a few other riders who crossed the center-line on blind-corners as well. Delaying the apexes is your friend and may save your life.
2. There is a notorious decreasing-radius left-turn that has claimed the lives and motorcycles of quite a few riders. If you go on YouTube and search "Suches Loop Crash" you'll see the exact turn I'm talking about. Here's one, for example (you can even see the white cross at 0:40). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrLCDyjSBYY
Watch out for this turn! All the bends leading up to it are predictable, and if you don't catch the decreasing radius, you will have a bad time.

Great quality roads, some amazing scenery, and some very dangerous spots. It's easy to get caught up in with the hyperbikes on this route, and ride beyond your limits. There are several spots with an 8 foot shoulder leading to a 100+ foot cliff, with no guardrails. Be waryf, and ride YOUR ride and focus on YOUR line. That 22 year old on a liter bike will wait for you at the bar in Suches...

A blast. Some incredible switchbacks and hairpins. I rode this the first time 2-up, so I didn't ride it as aggressively as I would have without. The stretch on 19 in Vogel State Park is incredible. A roller coaster. If at all possible try to ride on a weekday for less traffic. Helen, GA is not too far away and a tourist trap resort town, which is also a start/destination for many riders and drivers. A busy holiday weekend or one with a festival there will make the road significantly more crowded.

Very easy to get yourself in some serious trouble with a cliff on one side and a 3 foot ditch/wall on the other. Also make sure to stop by TWO before you get on Wolfen Gap Road!
