Written Directions

One of the most spectacular rides you can take. Take US 20 between Shoshoni Wyoming and Thermopolis Wyoming following beside the Wind River. The canyon ride offers the rider a scenic view of natural structures and goes as deep as 2,500 feet. Canyon road is filled with twisties and tunnels galore.

Scenery

An exciting ride for those who enjoy traversing tight corners and thundering through tunnels borrowed in mountain sides and scenic enough for passengers to go through a roll of film in minutes. US 20 starts at the Boysen Reservoir and this canyon road follows the Wind River through a gorgeous cut in the earth as deep as 2,500 feet. On the other side of the river, follows an old railroad track.

Drive Enjoyment

The road is well maintained with plenty of twisties, tunnels and a beautiful scenery.

Tourism Opportunities

You'll be able to refuel in both Shoshoni and Thermopolis...but while traveling through, be sure to stop in at the Wind River Canyon Whitewater & Fly-fishing Outfitter. It's the only outfitter permitted to raft/fish in the Indian Reservation portion of the canyon. You'll also pass by Boysen State Park which surrounds the Boysen Reservoir.

The Wind River Canyon Run is one that I simply stumbled across trying to get from Casper, WY to Cody, WY on my way to the Chief Joseph's Scenic Highway and the Beartooth Highway.

I had never heard of the Wind River Canyon until I drove into it on my way from Shoshoni to Thermopolis.

I must say that this is now one of my favorite roads. Basically, you have a river with a road on one side, a railroad track on the other, and high canyon walls surrounding that on both sides. The views of the river and the canyon walls are spectacular.

Unfortunately, I was being chased by a pretty ugly storm, so I didn't take time to stop at any of the numerous overlooks to take pictures.

I'm going back out west in 2013 with a friend who's never been to the area and Wind River Canyon will be on the short list of places we will visit while there. And, this time I'll be taking lots of pictures.
