Written Directions

East side of Custer State Park at the Jct. of 16A & Wildlife Loop RD. head south. It will turn northeast and then run into Route 87. Not take a right/head north on 87 and that will start to head north and then turn towards the east and merge with 16A again. Stay on 16A (Route 87 will veer off to the left/north) as 16A heads east and completes your loop (about 31 miles in all).

Scenery

Open grasslands with rolling pine-speckled hills. You may also see North American bison, pronghorn, white-tailed deer and mule deer, elk, coyotes, burros and prairie dogs. Plenty of pull offs for viewing and picture taking. Custer State Park is the home of as many as 1,500 free roaming bison, they are unpredictable and dangerous, do not approach, if in the road wait for them to move.

Drive Enjoyment

Very good, with few tar snakes. There are plenty of curves with a few tight switchbacks along with some steep elevation changes making it a fun ride!

Tourism Opportunities

On the Southeast part of the loop the Wildlife Station Visitors Center gives visitors shade and information on wildlife and outdoor habitats. Custer State Park is fee park and a park license is required. Camping, fishing, hiking, boating and horseback riding. Those with dual purpose bikes can enjoy the many interior park roads of hard packed dirt & gravel for exploring and wildlife viewing.

We rode it during the Sturgis Rally in 2013, the weather was perfect! It's a beautiful, big park with lots of wildlife. Take your time and enjoy the nature around you. Don't get too close to the Buffalo.

We got up early one morning in hopes to see the wildlife, didn’t happen. A lady at the Visitors Center said the Bison were 6-8 miles down one of the gravel roads. We went on around the loop, had a great breakfast at Blue Bell Lodge, just a few thousand feet after we pulled out of restaurant, heading north on 87, saw three buffalo on side of road.
