Written Directions

You start this trip at the intersection of US Highway 74 and NC Route 28 and simply head south on Route 28 to Franklin, NC.

Scenery

Nothing is better than riding through the woods, along waterfalls. This road will take you to four water falls, three of them are easy access to. You can drive you vehicle under Bridal Veil, you can walk under Dry Falls, and the other I can't spell, you can see from the road. Glenn Falls requires some walking.

Drive Enjoyment

If you like turns, switch backs, nice black top, this is the road for you. Most people like the Dragons Tail or Deal's Gap, I like this road better. Less traffic and safer.

Tourism Opportunities

There are no shopping, camping, restaurants. However, along US highway 74 there are plenty of amenities and if you continue on Route 28 south as it passes through Franklin and merges with Highway 64, you can take this into Cashiers where you will find gas stations, food stops, etc. Close to the bottom of route 28 there is a Gem Store and they will give you a FREE MAP of all the waterfalls in the area. Stop in and get a FREE MAP. Take the entire trip down route 28 then follow the road into Cashiers for lunch and gas. Let me know what you think about this road, I believe it to be one of the best roads I've ever been on in North Carolina and that includes the Dragon's Tail. This is my fifth year going to N.C. to ride. My friends and I know N.C. (Maggie Valley area) pretty well by now. Email me at: .

This is quite possibly the best road in the entire country. It has everything you could ask for. Tight curves, sweepers, off camber, descending radius, a few straightaways, beautiful views and hardly any traffic at all. Definately the best road in the area including the Gap.

Great route that peters out a bit as you get down into Franklin. The north part of the road is just a wiggling ribbon. What a fun ride. The road isn't particularly dirty, or dangerous. Not a lot of towns passed through, not a lot of traffic. As such it's always been a joy to ride on. Twisties that tame down to sweepers the further south you go.

This is about my favorite road. Legal speed limit posted is 55 MPH. You will be lucky to do that. So many curves. Knee dragging curves. Good pavement. This road is lightly traveled, mostly locals who know to watch for two wheelers. portions afford good views, but you will be too busy grinnin at the pavement to notice. There are a couple sections along the river which is nice. Once you come into the northern part of Franklin it can get crowded. There are some other backroads to avoid this. We ride this all the time and call it Coke Truck road because one of our group narrowly missed a Coke truck swinging over the double yellow at a tight curve. Incorporate this route with the Cullasaja Gorge into Highlands and you will have a great day!
