Written Directions

If you ever ride out to DCL and get stuck in that traffic up on 70 or 68, and you have a bike, this is the road for you. Yes you go through some towns, but the twisties and the views and lack of ridiculous traffic makes it so worth the trip. I usually got on VA rt 50 around Dulles Airport (tacks on an hour or so) and just head west on 50. When you get to Red House, where 219 crosses 50, take 219 north and it drops you off at Deep Creek Lake.

Scenery

As you're climbing up through the hills and coming back down, you are surrounded by trees (GREAT in the fall colors!!!) you pass through plenty of quaint towns, cross over and run along rivers. As you cross over the tops of the mountains you get some GREAT valley views along the way.

Drive Enjoyment

The biggest challenges I've had on this road was when I got caught in a rainstorm going over the mountains. in some of the switchbacks going down the hill the rain had formed a river about 2-3 inches deep, but if you go slow, its not slippery, just wet. Not a lot of potholes, but there are definitely chances to find rocks in the road as this is a mountain highway.

Tourism Opportunities

Every 20-40 miles there's a town with a gas station and a couple of eateries. Romney has a motorcycle store about a mile off of 50 down route 28 on the left.

Pretty solid ride. 50 is a road you can take fast or just cruise. (Mind the MD police, if you like your speed. They do exist.) There's plenty of nice views, a spattering of hard twisties, but many soft stuff and some straights. If you wish to bypass 219N into Deep Creek because of the traffic (Yuk, traffic.) run a google maps of 'Gormania, MD' to 'Deep Creek, MD' to get a 'back roads' way to Deep Creek that is much more relaxing and enjoyable than some old lady cutting you off in Oakland because she didn't see you.

50 through West Virginia is a great ride. Lots of elevation changes and twists without excessive traffic.
