Written Directions

Start in Walhalla, SC and head north on route 28, cross the SC/GA border, stay on route 28, cross the GA/NC border, and head into Highlands, NC (then end point).

Scenery

Beautiful National Forest scenery. Mountains, Rivers and Waterfalls ... a great sampling of 3 states in a nice 30 mile run! Travels through the Sumter National Forest and later Nantahala National Forest.

Drive Enjoyment

Plenty of tight curves as well as some long sweepers, nice transitions. For the pavement, the majority of the road is in good shape. Once in the forest area you can twist the throttle and drag your knees.

Tourism Opportunities

Not a lot between Walhalla and Highlands, so, fill up before you leave Walhalla. No restaurants or other facilities for miles.

I took 28 north from where it intersects with 107 in south carolina. 28 north was a great ride with good quality road and not too many other cars. I strongly suggest this ride for good curves.

For a longer adventure, consider this...take 28 north until it intersects with 64. Head east on 64, turn north on 281, turn east (right) on Wolf Mountain Rd (be careful because the street sign is missing. It's right after a small bridge on the right if you're heading north. If you drive by a parking area near the water with some large graphic infomational displays about the local area, turn around because you just missed it. If you're driving south, it's after the parking area and before the bridge). At one point you have to take an unexpected right turn to get on Tanassee Gap Rd so keep your eye out for it. Then take 215 north (which intersects with the Bue Ridge Parkway) and if you want to keep riding turn onto 276 south. 276 intersects also with the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Any riding off the Interstate system through the Smokies is beautiful. The one thing I would do different is ship my golf clubs to Highlands as there are some of the most beautiful golf courses in those hills around Highlands and Cashiers. Would be the ultimate bike trip to stop for a few days and golf, jump back on the bike and head to south, Augusta, Savannah???

Nice ride and also has a few stops to view the river. Had the wife on the back so it was not a hard ride for her either.
