Written Directions
Start in Salem, MO at the intersection of MO-19 (Main St.) and MO-32 (Scenic Rivers Blvd.). Head east on MO-32. Continue for approximately 52 miles to the intersection of MO-21. Turn left onto MO-21/MO-32 for 5 miles, to the town of Caledonia. Route ends at the intersection of MO-21 and MO-32.
Scenery
As the route leaves Salem, you very quickly get into a mix of meadows, farm fields, and woods, riding over rolling hills. In several miles, you cross into the Mark Twain National Forest, and move into the dense Ozark forest. The route winds through the forest for most of its length, only infrequently broken by creek crossings or the few small towns, until several miles before the intersection with MO-21, where the road straightens out back into farmland.
Drive Enjoyment
This is one of the best rollercoaster rides in the Missouri Ozarks. While very few really tight turns, there are almost constent sweeping 30-40 MPH curves and rolling hills along the main section inside of the Mark Twain National Forest. The pavement is well maintained rolled asphalt.
Tourism Opportunities
Salem is one of the popular tourist destinations in Missouri, and has a number of local attractions, shops, and restaurants.
About midway on the route is the town of Bixby, famous for the Bixby Country Store. A real old-school general store (you can literally buy everything from grocery staples to hardware and tools to basic automotive items and hunting gear), it's renown for its lunch counter, offering both hot and cold sandwiches, hot entrees, "rabbit food" (salads and wraps), and hand dipped ice cream. You can eat at one of the many tables inside, or in the train caboose parked outside.
Caledonia is at the eastern end of the route, and is a historic small town (with 33 buildings on the National Historic Register) with many small shops, several restaurants, and the well-know Caledonia Village Barn, a popular wedding and event venue. Most of the businesses are adorned with "barn quilt" paintings by local artist John Smith.
Motorcycle Road Additional info
One cautionary note: Once in the National Forest, there are very few opportunities to pass if you encounter slower traffic. This can happen especially during the high tourist months, with RVs and vehicles towing boats, as well as tourists unfamiliar with the twisty road. If this happens, just relax and enjoy the scenery at a slower pace.
