Written Directions

To get to this route, travel to Trenton, ME and on to Hulls Cove, ME and enter the Acadia National Park via the Hulls Cove entrance. Entering here will put you on Paradise Hill Road and you'll take this till you cross state route 233 and the road changes names to Jordan Pond Road. Continue on this road till you see the turn off for Cadillac Summit Road (off to the left) which will take you up Cadillac mountain (1530 ft). Checkout the summit and then head back down to Jordan Pond Rd ... take a left on Jordan Pond Road so you are heading the same direction you were before you turned off. Continue on Jordan Pond until you see the split for Park Loop Rd (you will split off to the left). Stay on Park Loop Road as it takes you around the south part of the island and then turns north and finally runs into Main St (state route 3). Here you want to take a right on Main and take it straight into Bar Harbor. After checking out Bar Harbor, get back on the road and find your own great routes on Mount Desert Island. The bottom line here is, once you get on the island, you will find many great routes and roads!

Scenery

This route is located on Mount Desert Island, which is home of Acadia National Park. The park has dense forests 1,530 ft mountain and plenty of shoreline driving. While on the island, make sure you travel to the top of Cadillac Mountain to get a great 360-degree view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Drive Enjoyment

Overall a nice winding road with some slight inclines and declines. Depending on the time of the year and local tourist activity the road can get a little crowded.

Tourism Opportunities

This route doesn't specialize in amenities yet it has a good number of things to do in its short 27 miles ... the wonderful scenery is what you will remember.

Hulls Cove visitor center (May-Oct, 207-288-3519) offers information on the park and the surrounding area.

There is a Nature Center along the route and the Robert Abbe Museum of Stone Age Antiquities.

Stop at the Champlain Mountain Overlook for great views!!!

About a half mile past Sand Beach you can stop and see the Thunder Hole where during high seas waves rush in to a cove and compress trapped air creating a 'thunder' sound.

Wagon rides are available from the Wildwood Stables (207-276-3622) from late May to early October.

Jordan Pond House offers meals and 'tea on the lawn' for those of you who enjoy such traditions.

Cadillac Mountain (1,530 ft) is the highest point on the east coast north of Brazil. Taking this detour will add about another 8 miles (roundtrip) to your trip.

The wonderful town of Bar Harbor is near by this route and offers first class vacation and tourism accommodations.

Excellent ride and beautiful scenery. The smell of balsam fir mixing with the smell of the ocean. We make this trip almost every year and still enjoy it. There are a great set of cabins just before the park entrance (1/2 -1 mile)

We rode this loop from Ellsworth, ME, at the beginning of leaf peeping season, Oct 2015. Ellsworth has more hotel/food options than Trenton. The Acadia Park Loop was a wonderful experience, although a short distance to travel. A nice day included Cadillac Mtn, Jordan Pond, and time shopping in Bar Harbor. We will return to this and other great Maine back roads.
